In a galaxy, far, far, away!
How often do you open a magazine or see a runway photo and think, “yeah right. I can’t pull that off?” In this case the runway robots and Tron-inspired editorials could literally scare you. Well have no fear, I’m here to help you pull apart the pieces and add the fashion-forward elements to your wardrobe that you can wear. While many buzz words are used to describe this trend — modernism, minimalism, architectural and android chic, just to name a few — the staples for this style are actually very simple and sophisticated.
Celestial glow
Stand out in stark white. Not only can white be worn year-round — the “LWD” (a.k.a., the little white dress) is the new modern classic. After a dark fall fashion season, head-to-toe white is fresh for spring and summer, and does wonders for creating a crisp appearance. This clean base is versatile, and with the right accessories, can make a strong, polished statement rather than a sweet one. New age accessories can add a modern twist to basic pieces you already own. Select light and airy elements such a chrome cuff, Lucite wedges, clear bangles, plastic handbags or an abstract necklace, but keep it simple, less really is more with this look. Yeohlee dress, Takashimaya, 212-350-0100; Raquel sandals, $79.95, www.ninashoes.com; Ben Amun color-blocked necklace, $195, 212-944-6480; Kenneth Jay Lane ring, $75, www.maxandchloe.com; clear tote, $28, www.baghaus.com
Bobbie’s beauty buzz: Opt for a makeunder! Use sheer foundations for a barely-there base or tinted moisturizers for a dewy complexion, and add an Orbit-like “ding” (know the commercial?) to your temples and upper cheekbones with a highlighter like Stila’s All Over Shimmer #9 ($30, sephora.com)
Modern metallics
I’ve been mentioning metallics for a while now, and shiny hues are proving they’re here to stay — popping up in every aspect of your wardrobe, from handbags and headbands to shirts and shoes. Many different metallics are coming into play, with star-like silver shining brightest this season. But you can also consider warm alternatives such as champagne and bronze. Flattering for most skin tones, all these shades will help you sparkle. Add a flash of the future to your office suit with a lamé sequin top, lucite wedges and a gunmetal clutch. It’s the perfect way to transform your work uniform into an out-of-this-world evening look. Club Monaco blazer, $199, pant, $129, www.clubmonaco.com; H&M sequin silver top, $29.90, www.hm.com; Tobago wedge, $89, www.ninewest.com
Bobbie’s beauty buzz: Ditch the dark nails, and paint your tips with a metallic tint. Chanel sent silver down the runway this season, but if you’re not ready for a full metallic manicure, ask for silver instead of white next time you get a French. It will add just the perfect amount of sheen to your sophisticated look.
Fashion-forward fabrics
Technology has helped move fashion forward with an array of new textures. Mesh, nylon and PVC as well as treatments like rubberized coatings are making their way down the runway for a function-meets-fashion appeal. These new layers offer a Space Age, sporty feel and help add another visual element to your classics. Top off a simple tank and shorts or shell and pencil skirt with a lightweight nylon parka for an instant update. A mesh tank or slip dress will add interest, while a vinyl messenger bag can work in place of a traditional briefcase or handbag. Arthur Mendonca tunic and shorts, $250-1300, www.mendonca.ca; Cole Haan metallic lightweight stadium jacket, $495, 800-201-8001; Dezario “Secret” wedges, $75.95, www.endless.com
Bobbie’s beauty buzz: Hair should look just as effortlessly polished and functional as the fashions this season. Pull yours back into a simple ponytail or keep it super sleek and straight for a modern, minimalist ‘do.
Proportion play
The silhouette sets the scene for sophisticated, structured fashion. Slim-fitting, sleek pants, and clean, cropped jackets are two key pieces that will help balance out this sharp, polished style. Look for long tanks, lean lines, architectural-inspired details and oversized platforms to play an important supporting role in this season’s android-chic fashions. Pleats or darts in unusual places can create shape, while sky-high footwear will help exaggerate your entire frame. Shelly Steffee tank, $90-500, www.shellysteffee.com; Club Monaco cropped jacket, $179, www.clubmonaco.com; Anlo charcoal jeans, $180, Henri Bendel: 212-247-1100; Tory Burch ballet flat, $195, www.shopbop.com; Ben Amun headband, $75 and clear lucite bangle with Swarovski crystals, $125, Henri Bendel: 212-944-6480
